The latest issue of De Wekker focuses on the theme of anger and discontent. In the foreword, editor-in-chief A. Hakvoort explains why it is not strange to write about this topic during Advent. Advent is a passionate call for justice and peace, he writes later in the magazine. “Now that we are unable to remain one church, we should celebrate Advent more like the early church did: with repentance and humility, out of fear of the coming Christ.”
We live in turbulent times. Moses was also born into a world that was dark. Justice minister W.J. Plantinga shows how Moses“ mother dealt with this. Later, the adult Moses sings about God's wrath, which is aroused by injustice and wickedness. ”In His wrath, He paves the way to restoration, to peace," writes Prof. Dr. H.G.L. Peels in the Word Work section. Prof. Dr. A. van den Os elaborates on this warning form of God's moving love.
Is anger a sin? Psychiatrist Esther van Fenema demonstrates that John Chrysostom (345-407), Archbishop of Constantinople, turns this notion on its head: those who do not become angry when there is reason to do so are committing a sin. This is not about revenge, but about justice.
Want to discuss anger further? You can, with the ten propositions provided by Steef Post. He is working on a thesis at TUA University on polarisation and conflict in the Christian community.
Also in this issue: an obituary for Rev. J.C. van der Vecht and various news items from our churches.
