Primary school is very challenging for San children in Botswana. Because they speak their native language, San, they cannot follow education in the national language very well. The Kaikagu preschool prepares San toddlers for primary school.
How's that? Diaconate went on a visit. Herewith a day at the kindergarten.
The school consists of two classes. When we enter, the teachers are busy preparing for the class day. The cook is also already there. The children get a good and nutritious meal from the school every day, as they do not always get it at home.
Teacher Anna starts with a Bible story. She tells it in the children's Santaal using materials from the translation project. Hessel and Coby Visser started this translation work and now the preschool is also reaping the benefits.
In the youngest group, today's topic is about eating healthy food and what healthy food is. After her explanation, the children will elaborate on the topic in a drawing or a cutting. Of course, there is singing, complete with movements and in various voices. It sounds wonderful.
In the senior group, Miss Keipele teaches the numbers one to ten. The children are well engaged and practise the numbers on the fingers of their hands. This subject too is then incorporated with drawings.
During the meal, the teachers confer, together with an assistant. Tomorrow they want to do something in the garden. Vegetables are grown there, which are used for the school meal.
It was a well-spent day.
