The Apeldoorn Theological University (TUA) was originally founded as an education for pastors within the Christian Reformed Churches. That Theological School, founded in 1894, was opened in 1968 to students who did not want to become pastors in the CGK, but who wanted to pursue an academic theological education. The name changed to Theological College. In 1989, the course was granted university status and has since been called Theological University Apeldoorn.

Since 1919, the course has been located in Apeldoorn, in a spacious mansion on Wilhelminapark. The original villa has since been expanded into a modern building complex.

The programme has experienced steady development and expansion. TUA's students, faculty and teaching support staff form a close-knit community committed to the development and renewal of a biblically-oriented, Reformed theology from a heartfelt commitment to the Reformed faith tradition.

The general synod is the highest body of the CGK and therefore also of the TUA. Three deputations (curatorium, supervision and study and incentive fund) give substance to church responsibility.
