Friday 31 January was a sad day for our denomination. The proposal for an interim model by the Commissie Toekomst Kerkverband (CTK) turned out to have insufficient support. A track that could possibly get our churches out of the impasse raised such objections for a whole number of delegates that it proved untenable for them. How to proceed now?
Approach
For some time, there has been talk of growing apart in our churches. Divergent views on women and ministry and homosexuality, pulpits remaining closed to certain ministers, are examples. The affirmation of women in offices without church-ordained space to do so has led to much unrest and dissatisfaction.
The General Synod, which has to provide leadership in this turbulence, appointed a committee in June 2024 to outline a fruitful perspective for our denomination. At a closed session day in October, this plan was presented and received with gratitude. The elaboration of this plan, the interim model, was discussed and commented on during the first week of session.
After that discussion, the synod instructed the CTK to seek more support for its plans. The CTK went to work on the criticisms it received and on the various proposals and amendments. The amended report was presented in the second week of session.
Decision
In the discussion, it became clear that for a number of delegates, the plan is not bearable. A major objection is the co-responsibility of ministers for things that happen in other congregations. Another objection is the equality of congregations in regular and interim classes. After internal discussions, the CTK decided to return the assignment. It proved impossible to increase support for the plan of interim classes. Support from a large majority of delegates for this plan proved unfeasible. It was with great dejection and dismay that this was observed.
Perspective?
How to move forward? Can we move on? Is there perspective for us as churches? After consultation, the synod's moderamen has proposed to the (pre-)advisers to outline a perspective in the situation that has arisen. With a number of experts, the moderamen will work in the coming period to develop a realistic plan. This will require two things:
- Prayer. As churches, please pray for wisdom from our God. James says in his letter, "And if any of you lacks in wisdom, let him ask of God, Who gives to each one abundantly and does not reproach, and it will be given to him." Please pray in this way for our churches and for us as moderators.
- Calmness. As a local congregation, please do not make any major decisions about your place in the church body or other major issues. As a moderation committee, we can imagine that you have questions. We are ready to speak to you at any time and answer your questions if possible.
Hoping that God will be gracious to our churches,
On behalf of the moderation committee,
Rev. J. Oosterbroek
