ISR040 Meals for vulnerable school children
project description
In Jerusalem a great number of Jewish and Arabic families is living below the poverty line. Parents cannot afford school lunch for their children. The Jewish organisation Yad Elie distributes meals among the poorest children, no matter their religion and origin. Besides, Yad Elie provides many ways to create awareness regarding healthy nutrition to teachers and parents
why this project?
The mission statement of Yad Elie is that ‘no child should suffer hunger in the country which is full of milk and honey’. Our church totally agrees with that. In this project our deputies work closely together with Centre for Israel Studies (CIS). Yad Elie provides Arabic and Jewish children a healthy meal at school. At the same time, teachers and parents receive training about the importance of right nutrition.
impact?
The past year Jewish and Arabic teenagers started a kitchen garden in Jerusalem Forest. At various schools orchards and school gardens were constructed, and the management of these gardens is transferred to the schools themselves. Children received education on health and nutrition. Yad Elie is pleased to see the enthusiasm of schools, when visiting them. Many schools understand the importance of good nutrition.
what can we learn?
Israel is a developed country. Still, poverty can be widely spread within a developed country. Whoever is blessed richly, may help others who live nearby or far away.
