SIE144 Shelter for victims of sexual violence
projectomschrijving
During the civil war between 1991 and 2002, sexual violence was committed against women and girls on a large scale in Sierra Leone. Since then, one in three women in the country face rape. The young, Christian organization AWESSCRV no longer sits idly by and stands up for this vulnerable group. It provides shelter, food, medical and legal help for abused girls and women. In addition, AWESSCRV employees offer a listening ear and guidance. Safety and security are the beginning of recovery.
why this project?
The consequences for the victims are major. In addition to the high physical risks such as HIV/AIDS and pregnancies, the psychological and social consequences for the victims are enormous. Victims often suffer from depression, post-traumatic stress and shame. They are often held responsible, resulting in social exclusion. The shame and social consequences cause the girls and women to remain silent.
impact
By providing shelter, food and medical assistance to the affected women and girls, they can relax. Legal help and therapy gives them recognition and acceptance from the environment. Education and developing professional skills bring change to their lives. The care by AWESSCRV helps victims to feel like they are part of society (again). And perhaps most importantly, they get justice.
what can we learn?
Injustice is of all times and places. Everyone wrongs and is wronged. It is God’s command to do justice. Do we want to listen to others, are we prepared to give and address injustice for those who cannot stand up for their rights?
