The latest issue of The Alarm Clock looks at Pentecost from different angles.

For instance, Rev Hoekman writes in Woordwerk about God's name ‘Father of lights’. This name appears only in James, but has a rich meaning that was clear to Jewish readers. Ingrid Dobbe-Bakker discusses the promise from Joel 2 that old people will dream dreams.

That it is not always possible to experience light, the 52-year-old man speaking in the Pastoral section knows. He suffers from recurrent depression. When others want to say positive things to cheer him up, it actually makes things heavier.

Rev W.C. van Slooten writes about ways Satan operates. What calling follows from this for us? 28-year-old Klaas received his calling very directly. In Generations in the Church we read about him. He is differently abled and asked the Lord why. “[...] and He also answered.” Klaas recounts what he has seen as his calling ever since.

Cees van Breugel used to hand out flyers and Bibles but experienced no blessing in doing so. When he moved to Rotterdam and started working as an evangelist, he discovered the ‘secret’, which he shares with us.

Furthermore, this issue includes a treatment of the book Gender Guide, which deals with Christian ethics around transgender care. Jeannet de Jong also calls on church councils to speak out clearly on smoking to protect our children and young people.

The issue concludes with an explanation of the decision taken by the CGK in Groningen on the future of the congregation and with information on the formation course starting D.V. in September.
