In the run-up to Easter, De Wekker devotes attention to the theme of sacrifice. In the meditation, Rev F.W. van der Rhee emphasises that Jesus is the Sacrificial Lamb, who gave his life in our place. Sacrifices are a gift to God and a means of atonement and reconciliation, explains professor emeritus M.J. Paul in the Wordwork section. “The word ‘atonement’ is a central concept in the doctrine of faith of Jews and Christians. It refers to how the relationship between God and man can be restored.” He discusses at length how a sacrifice can bring reconciliation. Further theological depth on sacrifices is given by Rev J Groenleer.

For Muslims, the Feast of Sacrifice is important and this offers openings to engage with them about Christ's sacrifice on the cross. Cees Rentier, pastor-director of Gospel & Muslims, helps readers get started.

Dr Wim Dekker researched sacrifices made in our modern society. “The fear of giving yourself up for the other is deeply woven into our society,” he observes. Making a sacrifice that is appropriate in all sincerity, as well as receiving a sacrifice, also turns out not to be easy. But he also sees: “There is still a lot of sacrifice going on now. By parents, by children, by workers. There is still a lot of love and care in our society. Certainly also in the church.” Rev H. de Bruijne tells a particularly personal story about this. He received a donor kidney from his sister. Another personal story is from a man, who cares for his sick wife. “Will my story appear in a magazine about ‘sacrifices’? But I don't experience caring for my wife as a sacrifice.”

Church and politics, church politics - Prof A. van den Os takes a sharp look at it in Nader Bekeken. “If
talk about the church and church people in terms of sociological groups or political colours, the wait is for immense division, alienation and polarisation.”
