The first issue of Doorgeven in 2026 is about courage and hope. That is also the theme of assistance Sunday.

In several places in the Bible, we are urged to keep courage and pointed to the hope in Jesus Christ. The stories in this issue show that in practice, being strong and courageous is not always easy, but courage often turns into encouragement.

Marjanne Hendriksen experienced it when she told Bible stories to children on a stinking rubbish dump in Zambia. Evangelist Cees van Breugel noticed it when he obeyed the call to work in Limburg. Nizar from Lebanon regained hope and confidence in the future when he sat that agricultural training and practical help really improved his income. Rev Ntlatleng from South Africa often finds it difficult to serve his congregation. He keeps his spirits up through prayer and hard work. And the opening of Het Koffiehoekje in Leiden was a succession of encouraging answers to prayer.

A Christian in a closed country was encouraged beyond hope once she gathered the courage to ask a colleague if she could pray for him. That particular story, for the safety of all involved, can only be read in the paper edition of Doorgeven. All draw from the same Source as Jan and Tabitha Kievit in Senegal. They have faced a lot of adversity. From their own experience, they also encourage us: “Paul writes that if we hope in the Messiah only for this life, we are the measly wretched of all people. Perhaps we will not live to see the church in Senegal flourishing and independent ourselves. But it is worth giving our lives for the spread of the Gospel that brings eternal life.”
