Micha Sunday is an annual themed day focusing on justice. Every year, more than a thousand churches in the Netherlands take part. This year’s Micha Sunday, on 18 October, returns to the original text: “He has shown you, O man, what is good.” (Micah 6:8).
On the topic
It seems so simple: we’ve been told what’s right. Don’t use more than creation can restore. Look after one another, and in particular those groups that are more vulnerable. Share the wealth you have. These are lovely ideas – until you try to put them into practice in your own life. With this Micha Sunday, Micha Netherlands invites you to listen to these ancient words and challenges you to reflect on how they apply to you.
Director Harmen Niemeijer-Scheffer: “Working for God’s Kingdom doesn’t seem all that complicated; after all, you know what the Lord wants from you, don’t you?” He explains that it isn’t quite so simple when you consider just how practical and immediate it is. Think of the choices you make in the supermarket, but also how you behave towards people you don’t know or how you treat creation. I realise that it’s actually quite complicated to do what God asks of us. It is precisely this tension that this Micah Sunday is all about.”
Contents of the church pack
With the church resource pack, congregations can tailor the themed service to suit their own needs: an explanation of the theme, sermon outlines and a sermon text, materials for children’s and young people’s ministry, suggestions for hymns and prayers, discussion questions and practical tips for getting started.
This year, Thea de Ruijter, Philip Powell, Leon Rasser and Carin Slotboom-Meijers are contributing. Each of them writes about what ‘doing justice’ means to them today.
