A report by Rev A.A.L. Aalderink
The first session week of the General Synod started on Tuesday 12 November in Nunspeet.
The opening with prayer and Scripture reading by the presiding minister, Rev Buijs, was followed by a meditation by Br Heijstek from James 1.
Some reports, including on the finances of our denomination, could be dealt with smoothly. After lunch, the meeting continued in committee (behind closed doors), for a lengthy discussion on the future of our denomination.
Two more reports were discussed in the evening. First on Church Day, which was held on 9 November. Then on Church & Israel. Concerns due to increasing violence in and around Israel and growing anti-Semitism are also occupying the synod.
Reference was also made to the many millions of Christians who are persecuted. Our persecuted brothers and sisters are busy with very different things than what we in Nunspeet address and ask for our prayers. The violent things happening in the world may and should fill us here in Nunspeet with humility.
The first day ended with prayer and hymn 95:
...Him now who works in us and guides us,
that goes beyond all our prayers
And is more than our deepest thinking gauges,
they glory and glory
